Clay
I am sure you and i will never really agree, but i assure one and
all, I have never burnt or injured a model with direct plaster.
Obviously as I say several places on my website, one needs to know
how to work with plaster and should never think "I'll figure this out
on the model; if he can do it, so can I."
In summertime Memphis, nice cool plaster feels pretty good!
I suggested to George he apply a layer of plaster outside the plaster
bandage. Real plaster layer should be 1/2" or less. It might also be
applied once the mold is off the model but then usually you'd flick a
thin layer on first, then add more. A lot of nice bandage molds have
been ruined by pouring a fragile mold full of wet plaster. It takes
in some water and collapses.
Likewise, the flicking technique works for making your casting. I'm
pointing out there are a handful of techniques one should know to get
serious with this artform.
Alginate and silicone also require decent mother-mold technique, and
plaster is the material of choice.
