Topic Subject : Re: Re: Plaster turning moldy - HELP

Nancy

There are dots and then there is real mold. If you are casting the
hands in USG's #1 Casting Plaster, be advised the plaster contains
starch, which moves to the surface along with water that is
evaporating. The starch layer in the surface makes the piece easier
to paint and makes the surface tougher than it would be otherwise
(Pottery Plaster doesn't have it.) But guess what: flies love the
starch. They walk around licking it. Then they fly-poop. This gives
the tiny dots i think you have.
Wash them away, brushing with a soft brush or washcloth. All you can
do is let them dry shielded from flies.
CJ's advice seems to imply very thick castings and very cool, damp
weather. Normally in July in Memphis, hands would be fully dry in 2
days. This year, it will not stop raining. So I would put new work on
a rack in front of a box fan.
Mold looks like funny little blotches, maybe dime sized, both red and
grey-black. Causes cancer? Good lord. I wash it, put it in full sun,
and use watered-down bleach. I haven't tried the milk finish for fear
of the flies.
Good luck
