Tri, you should have been able to pull the "column" of alginate from between the model's legs without its breaking off. You didn't mention the brand of alginate that you are using. Alginates vary considerably in tear resistance. If you will look in the ALI Library, there is an article I wrote titled "Testing a New Alginate - Fibergel E/FX Grade." I was convinced at the time and am still to this day convinced that Fibergel is the most tear resistant alginate available. I am sure that I have cast something like two dozen butt castings in the last year alone and have not had a single "column" tear.
Also, the rubber you asked about a couple days ago is actually a company called Silicone Inc. which is headquartered in North Carolina.
Speaking of rubber, you also asked about releasing skin safe platinum silicone. My experience has been that no release agent is very effective on hair and I have tried every agent suggested to me along with anything else I could think of. By the time I could put on a layer thick enough to be even somewhat effective on hair, I would have lost too much skin detail. The "expensive" stuff you mentioned is absolutely incredible. You do not need any release at all, it simply does not stick to hair. Since a feather is just an elaborate hair, it doesn't stick to feathers either. The good news is that I am hearing that another company is close to offering a competitive fast setting skin safe platinum cured silicone non sticking rubber at a lower price.
I am in western NY tonight but will be back in my Denver studio tomorrow afternoon. If I can be of any help, please call me at (303) 321-1074.
