Topic Subject : Re: Baby casts |

Vicki,
I always try to cast babies' hands and feet within the first month for three reasons. The smaller the cuter the casting. Also. in the first month the baby is usually very sedentary. Lastly, at that age, the baby is more likely to make a nice tight fist. Since I almost always make a secondary silicone rubber mold to make additional copies for the grandparents which increases my profit, it is easier and more successful to make a secondary mold of a fist than a half opened hand.
I have never had a problem with a newborn though I do have a concern. One must be very careful when removing the hand or foot from the alginate. Some alginates are pretty hard and can firmly hold on to the hand or foot. I prefer using Mold Gel SilFree Regular set. Not only is it quite soft when set up allowing for the hand or foot to be removed very gently but because it is made with no silica, there is no chance of the baby inhaling any silica particles air born during the mixing. The setting time is stated as 4-5 minutes but if you use 90 degrees F. (32C.) you will reduce the setting time.
