Topic Subject : RE: A new topic has been added-Re: A new topic has been added-Casting a hand and foot as one

Dan

Clearly I am going insane!!

I did mean ankle, not the heel, the heel is held in the mother palm.

When I poured the first mould I filled it just over half full of plaster and
left it ten mins (I used water and plaster). When I went to pour the second
batch the first lot had moved away from the side of the alginate. As a
result some of the second pouring of plaster went down the gap and I ended
up with a bit of a mess on the mothers hand, where the detail had runs of
plaster on it, so I kind of had two depths to her hand if you see what I
mean.

I will use silicon when I make the coldcure mould. I have done this quite a
bit with pregant belly casts in the past which are much larger, but also 2D
not 3D and I am not sure how I will get the mould off the plaster when it is
dry. When I do the tiny hands and feet it comes off in one go, not so
confident with this happening this time around.

I can make a mould for the silicon to sit it, but again I am not sure of how
to do this. With the tiny feet it is easy to get them to keep thier shape

but if I make this larger mould too thick it will be hard to remove it and I
can't fix the support mold to the silicon until it is removed from the
plaster. Can I make the support mould when the silicon is still in place
and then remove that first, just to sit the piece on the mold before pouring
the coldcure?

So many questions, sorry.

Helen

------------Silica-Free & Oh So GREEN------->

NEW! MoldGel SILFREE. A revolutionary formula.
Made with all food-grade ingredients. It nourishes
the earth when discarded. 3-to-1 mix ratio yields
twice the volume as those 1-to-1 brands. Delayed
shrinkage for delayed casting - so creamy smooth, too.

Helen

Clearly you've got to block one hole. Here are other methods: Prepare a
shallow dish of plaster+fiber and set one hole squarely down on it. Or:
laminate the hole over with any fibrous stuff dipped in plaster. Or: set
mold on a piece of really soft real clay and bring the edges of the clay up
and smear into the support mold. Umm, you do have a support mold, right? No
mention of it.
Plaster does not shrink. After it takes a set it expands. If you think it's
shrinking, something weird may be going on.
Holes: one at wrist and one at "heal" [heel?] Should be at ankle, yes? Heel
is touching palm right?
This is not a big mold as such things go but maybe a little out of your
comfort zone now. I'd be using a thickened silicone I could paint on and
then spatula on. Then a real plaster/fiber support mold. You would eliminate
one hole when you make the secondary mold.
Let us know--
