Wayne, the trick is to gently press into the alginate, before it completely sets up, something fuzzy such as cotton, mock wool, doll's hair, cheesecloth, etc. which will becone embedded into the alginate as it gells. The mother mold will then be firmly attached to the alginate.
An easier way is to apply the alginate and once it is in place mist the surface with AlgiSlo which will keep the surface soft for a couple of minutes longer giving you more time to apply the fuzz. If the alginate sets up before you can apply the fuzz, AlgiSlo will resoften the surface. AlgiSlo is made by ArtMolds.
By the way, there is a much better way to make the mother mold than using plaster bandages. It is faster, easier, less costly, and will result in fewer imperfections in the casting. The method is to use cheesecloth and fast setting plaster. This method reaqlly works better.
