If you were to lay out the plaster, I assume, and create a box around the
plaster casting. Leave 3 or 4 inches from the outer most points of the plaster
within the box filling all of the voids with clay so that your mold compound
doesn't run behind the plaster casting. Mix your mold compound, brush on the
surface coat and then pour the remaining material around the plaster casting
inside of the box frame and brush the mold material from bottom to top. Once
the mold compound sets and is tact free, mix up Hydrocal and place it over
the mold compound and add and mix in hemp fiber.
Since it sounds as though you might not have enough mold compound on the
plaster casting as you described, then you'll need to add more mold compound to
make the mold thicker before you add your plaster mother mold. If the mold
compound is to thin it will tear and you will have wasted time by not setting
up properly and purchasing the correct material to begin with.
