Hi There
What a heart wrenching cast to have to take. I feel for the family and for
you.
I take casts with hands perpendicular quite often, but have never done so
for a large group. When I take mine this way it is because it is a baby who
is breastfeeding and can't be moved. Can you try a J-cloth? I am not sure
what they are called in America, a soft dish cloth, the type you throw away
after a few uses.
You might be able to put a layer of alginate on the cloth and bring that up
to the underside of the hands, getting help to hold it in place. You might
need several cloths to do this. You can then put more alginate on top of
the hands and work it into the creases etc. The bottom cloth should stop too
much from dropping off, but be sure to cover the furniture etc underneath
where you are taking the cast.
You might even be able to put the cloth with the alginate on it on a tall
table and get the family to arrange thier hands on this so one-one gets too
tired holding the cloths in place? If you make the alginate deep enough and
ask them not to put too much pressure on the table then you should get a
good cast. You can then pop the alginate on top as suggested above.
Hope this is of help. Let us know how you get on.

------------Silica-Free & Oh So GREEN------->
NEW! MoldGel SILFREE. A revolutionary formula.
Made with all food-grade ingredients. It nourishes
the earth when discarded. 3-to-1 mix ratio yields
twice the volume as those 1-to-1 brands. Delayed
shrinkage for delayed casting - so creamy smooth, too.

urgent help needed:--
For a handcasting of a boy who is dying of brain cancer-he cannot sit up so
I cannot get his hand and arm perpendicular to the bucket of alginate (along
with his 3 siblings). Because of this, Ill have to do this peice with the
hands lying flat, with each person holding the others wrist, which will
almos make a square. I want the front and back of the hands, not just the
top half, and I dont want any plaster backing to be attached. How do I do
this? The appt is this afternoon-they called this morning to tell me he
would not be able to sit up. Please help. Chrissy
