Hitchcock’s Show Receives A Warm Welcome
Saint Louis, MO -- April 22, 2007 -- The subject of the iconic mythic hero piqued the interest of more than 200 art lovers Saturday night at the grand opening of phd gallery on Cherokee Street. The guests turned out in droves to get a look at the life-size bronzed figures that are the unique creations of St. Louis artist and gallery owner Philip Hitchcock. HERO. GOD. MORTAL. is a collection of nearly twenty sculptures inspired by iconic art and classic myth.
Among the notables in attendance were Saint Louis University CEO Lawrence Biondi, who has commissioned a statue from Hitchcock for the university’s art museum, SLU’s Vice President for Facilities Management and Civic Affairs Kathleen Brady, SLU’s Real Estate Manager Peter Pierotti, and Ed and Anita Kidd. Stefene Russell, St. Louis Magazine senior editor and co-editor of the literary magazine 52nd City, also stopped in to admire the new space and Hitchcock’s new work. And rounding out the list of revelers was the ever affable KTVI FOX 2 NEWS anchor Kevin Steincross. Capturing the festivities on film was Bob Moore of SaintLouisFrontPage.com (see www.slfp.com/artgalleries.htm for the story and pictures)
Heroism is a recurring theme in Hitchcock's work. "I am interested in subject matter that is larger than life," says Hitchcock. "My work reimagines famous figures of mythology and art and places them in a modern context. The notion of heroism is especially relevant to today's culture and the immediacy of these sculptures makes those ideas very accessible."
Dr. William Whittington Assistant Chair of Critical Studies at the University of Southern California comments, "His aesthetic presents idealized castings of the human figure, which are powerful enough alone, yet he retrofits these bodies, infusing them with technology, eroticism, and discourses on pain and pleasure.... I strongly suspect that these sculptures will inspire a new generation of artists and art lovers to seek out the heroic stories of the past...that still resonate today."
HERO. GOD. MORTAL. is on view from noon until 4:00 p.m., Thursday through Sunday and by appointment. phd gallery is located at 2300 Cherokee Street, one block east of Jefferson in the heart of Antique Row. For more information, call the gallery at (314) 664-6644 or
