Topic Subject : Re: Re: A new topic has been added-Re: A new topic has been added-Re: A new topic...

The real tragedy here is that nobody seems to have noticed my "new work posting!" ;-) It's The Big Game Series...

On to the discussion of nudity in art and this particular piece "84 Vaginas and Erect Penises:" Having moved from Los Angeles to the buckle of the bible belt, I have experienced, first hand, just how worked up people get over nudity in art. Last year, one of me pieces was draped, until I unceremoniously yanked it from the Gallery. This year, it won a prize in the ALI competition. One man's porn is another woman's art.

Personally, I really like and admire the "84" piece. Is it mere licentiousness? Or is this a metaphor for sameness between genders? Or has the artist reduced humanity to its basest level of pro-creation: Men are but walking groins and women mere vessels to breed?

But the real issue here seems to hinge on the appropriateness in viewing that this piece has for children and (some) adults.

I believe when you enter a a museum or gallery (tangible or virtual) you should have an expectation of being challenged. You should have an expectation of nudity. And you should expect to be pushed out of your comfort zone. As a viewing adult I would tell you to fasten your seat belt because art can be a bumpy ride. If you are a parent with similar concerns, I would tell you to view the venue or site first and decide if it's appropriate for your children. My own daughter was exposed to all different kinds of art starting at a very young age. Her questions were innocent and direct. The only thing I was up against was my own level of comfort and shame. I also remember walking out on a film with her because I thought the violence against women depicted in that film was gratuitous and over the top.

Personally, I find violence, war, and poverty to be the real pornography.
